The influence of the Chinese PET recycling industry on the rest of the world is significant. The Chinese government’s announcement that waste imports, including PET, are to be banned from the end of 2017 has serious repercussions; not only for the Chinese fibre industry, the primary user of RPET; but also for those trading with China. This study analyses the developments in China that have led to the current situation, the regional impact of the ban and prospective outcomes providing an understanding of the key issues influencing the future demand for RPET.
