2017 US coal exports - unreported tonnes, drivers, and suppliers
Report summary
Through our research, we estimate that total US thermal coal exports in 2017 were 3.2 Mt higher than reported by most other sources of coal export data. We assess that total US thermal exports were 42.3 Mt and US metallurgical exports were 50.2 Mt, a 63% and 46% increase over 2016 respectively. In this insight, we also estimate US coal exports by basin. Our analysis shows that Central Appalachia (CAPP) exported the greatest portion of the total US coal exports in 2017 at 36.1 Mt: 31.7 Mt metallurgical and 4.4 thermal. Illinois Basin (ILB) had a record-breaking year for total coal exports this year, shipping over 10 Mt through the US Gulf of Mexico. Northern Appalachia (NAPP) saw a 160% increase in coal buying interest from India to 6 Mt in 2017, as a result of high coal prices in the pacific and petcoke bans instituted in several regions.
