Report summary
Contura was created in 2016, as one of two companies that emerged from the bankruptcy of Alpha Natural Resources. Contura received most of the "core" assets and is one of the primary producers of high volatile metallurgical coal in the region. In 2018, Contura and Alpha merged back together under the Contura name to become the largest US metallurgical coal producer. In 2021, Contura announced a name change to Alpha Metallurgical Resources, to highlight its focus on metallurgical coal production. Wood Mackenzie’s asset reports are built from the bottom up, incorporating a number of granular data metrics to ultimately produce our industry standard cash operating costs. This report contains a detailed asset note giving you a holistic view of the asset by the associated Excel download which enables interrogation of a whole series of cost and production metrics over the life of the asset.
