Enormous growth potential will keep India the major driver for thermal and metallurgical coal demand. Total power generation and crude steel production is expected to grow by 195% and 290%, respectively, over the next three decades. Despite developed countries shift towards carbon neutrality in the long term, coal fired generation will remain an integral part of Indian generation mix, but with a declining trend. India’s thermal coal import share will be 25% of global seaborne market by 2050. Growth in steel production to drive metallurgical coal import share to 42% of global seaborne trade in the long term.
