Coal markets - North America short-term outlook - April 2021
Report summary
April 2021 displayed standard shoulder season patterns of thermal coal demand. Prompt month spot prices did not move significantly as bearish sentiment offset bullish summer season fundamentals. Demand growth in the coming months will be significant over last year. April trended slightly colder than the five-year average, with accumulated heating degree days 2.5% higher than normal. Coal generation was 54.3 TWh vs just 40.5 TWh in April 2020. In addition to the colder temperature natural gas prices are US$1/mmbtu higher.
