Commodity Market Report
Coal markets - North America short-term outlook - October 2021
Report summary
US domestic spot prices skyrocketed at the beginning of October and remained at elevated levels through the end of the month. With little-to-no physical trades being executed, the price spike speaks to the widespread supply tightness we are seeing in the market. Long-term contracts are a key ingredient necessary for producers to boost supply, and it looks like utilities are coming around. As volatility and potential shortages unsettle the markets, customers seem more willing to enter into contracts than they have been in quite some time.
