Inner Mongolia is the largest coal-producing province in China. In 2023, it accounted for 26.0% of the country's total production. The western region contains the Ordos and Wuhai prefectures, which contribute 67% of production for the province. The Ordos prefecture is home to some of China's largest mining operations and new projects. Coal produced in this region is extracted using underground longwall operations as well as large-scale surface mines. It has become a favourable acquisition target for domestic companies from other provinces looking to expand.
