Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook August 2023
Report summary
August saw continued hot weather in the US, following record heat in July, contributing to a pick-up in generation demand and a much-needed draw-down of stockpiles. Despite this, low natural gas prices continue to undercut the coal market and keep the US domestic outlook bearish. Coal-fired generation will fall from August’s 80.7 TWh highs and remain well-below 2022 levels throughout the rest of 2023 and 2024.
