Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook December 2023
Report summary
2024 is shaping up to be another very bearish year for the US coal market. US coal producers will be challenged by projections for a warm winter, collapse in natural gas prices, and high coal stockpiles. Multi-year coal contracts established during the tight markets of 2021-2022 will provide some support to coal producers but as those expire, those companies will be more exposed. Utilities will eventually need to burn down the high inventories accumulated over the last year and into next, putting more downward pressure on producers.
