The coal market has begun to set its sights on spring. Gas prices fell from December and January levels as most buyers now assume that the worst of winter weather is behind them. As a result, spot prices for the majority of US coal brands are consistently flat. Also, with normal stockpile levels now within reach, coal-fired EGUs are again using longer-term purchase contracts. Elsewhere, new inspections at several Chinese ports have prolonged the clearance time for imported coals beyond normal levels and new projects in India have potential to provide relief to ILB coals.
