Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook July 2023
Report summary
As the US and the world shatter summer temperature records and July becomes the hottest month in history, power generation is being tested. With natural gas generation maxing out, coal capacity has been called into service to meet demand for cooling. Coal generation for July rose to around 80 TWh –an improvement from recent months but still below typical peak summer levels. Looking at the second half of 2023, producers are starting to respond to weaker coal demand. Several companies have revised their sales guidance downwards. Deliveries have been renegotiated or pushed into 2024.
