North America coal short-term outlook March 2021: Fundamentals shift amid mild weather
Report summary
Mild March temperatures and approaching warm weather have steadied US market fundamentals. A boost in generation last month spiked buyer interest but stockpiles are still high due to a generally warm winter and a difficult 2020. Coal generation will recede during the shoulder season but still remain well above 2020 levels. We expect total 2021 coal generation to reach 919 TWh – 19% higher than last year.
