Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook May 2023
Report summary
Domestic demand is suffering amid low gas prices and this shoulder season could have lasting effects throughout the year. Record-low coal generation and quickly growing stockpiles are placing stakeholders in a precarious position. Coal producers continue delivering on the contracts signed last year but utilities have little use with gas prices displacing coal generation. Stockpiles saw record growth to start the year and the opportunity to move surplus coal overseas is closing quickly.
