US productivity impacted by production slide

Report summary

In Q4 2013, overall productivity at US mines slipped by 1.7%. While most coal producing regions in the US saw a decline in productivity in Q4, the beleaguered Appalachian region actually bucked the trend, another signal that productivity there has stabilised. Total US coal production for 2013 fell to 982.2 million short tons, the first time since 1993 that US coal production has fallen below the 1 billion short ton per annum mark.
