Carbon pricing is seen as a critical policy tool to spur the energy transition. But what is the current status of carbon pricing around the world? The quarterly Carbon Price Tracker outlines developments in global carbon regimes. The series covers policy changes, price changes and evolving news stories in national and sub-national carbon markets. Highlights in Q2 2020 include: - Over the past quarter, one new country announced an intention to use carbon pricing. - Six other countries announced changes to their regimes. Three countries (Germany, Ireland and New Zealand) announced accelerations/strengthening of existing systems, particularly increases in carbon prices or decreases of caps. - Global average CO2 prices increased 4% on a weighted basis in Q2 2020 over Q1, as EU ETS prices rebounded from early March lows due to COVID-19.
