On 28 April, Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced it had submitted a formal application to join the PJM interconnection queue. The CFS application for a 400-MW nuclear fusion commercial power plant is among a batch of 811 proposed projects totalling 220 GW submitted to PJM, the largest competitive wholesale electricity market and regional transmission organisation in the US. Backed by energy giants Eni and Google, CFS is racing to bring the world's first commercial fusion power plant online in the early 2030s. The application marks a significant milestone in the commercialisation of fusion energy, signalling that the race to harness the power of the stars is accelerating beyond the laboratory and into the marketplace. Read more about what the application could mean for nuclear fusion and where the technology is headed in our latest insight.
