The imminent need to double or triple data centre capacity by 2030 means decarbonisation takes a backseat to availability of supply for developers and hyperscalers. But data centres already emit heavily: at an estimated intensity of 548 kg CO2 per MWh in the US, 48% above the grid average. What technically and economically viable options to decarbonise are actually available to them at scale? And are they willing to make the necessary efforts and pay the price for decarbonised power in the short- and long-terms if most other large industrial emitters are not?
