France energy markets long-term outlook 2020
Report summary
France's energy forecast is heavily shaped by its decarbonisation and nuclear phase-out policies. Greater uptake of renewables and replacement of fossil fuels is required in all sectors if these policies are to be successfully implemented and if France is to meet its ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. In this report, we highlight and address major trends, including: • The decline of nuclear power supply and the rise of renewables, with gas playing a key role in making up shortfalls throughout the forecast • The rise – then decline – of France's large power exports to neighbouring markets as the power mix evolves • Significant declines in energy demand, despite a rising population, due to efficiency gains and further movement away from energy intensive industry • The rapid decline in oil demand as conventional vehicles become more efficient and are replaced by EVs and NGVs • The government's emission reduction targets and the steps they are taking to meet them
