Prior to the global financial crisis, Sweden averaged GDP growth of 3.2% over the period 2000-07. Economic growth was driven by policy restructuring (initiated in the mid-1990s), increased labour participation rates and productivity gains. Sweden maintained sovereignty of their currency (the krona) by opting out of the euro. After contracting by 5.0% in 2009, the economy bounced back strongly in 2010 (6.2%) partly due to government stimulus.
