With global LNG supply set to grow 40% by 2030, lower spot LNG prices will kick start a new phase of LNG demand growth across Asia. Affordability has often been a constraint for gas and LNG demand growth, particularly in the power sector, where regulated electricity tariffs remain below import costs across many Asian developing markets, making subsidies critical for LNG imports. Could lower spot LNG price later this decade close the gap with regulated tariffs, unlocking latent demand? This insight identifies the LNG price thresholds that could trigger demand growth in four key Asian markets—China’s Guangdong province, Vietnam, Thailand and Bangladesh. We analyse power tariffs, domestic gas pricing systems, regulatory and policy frameworks to determine spot LNG price levels needed to meet local affordability limits within the power sector.
