Insight
European gas storage withdrawals drop sharply in February 2019 - Why did this happen?
Report summary
During winter months, gas storage is normally required to balance markets on a daily basis, however during February 2019 an unusual set of circumstances meant that marginal gas supplies were coming from spot gas purchases rather than storage. A combination of warm weather and plentiful supply resulted in day ahead prices dipping below summer prices. This signalled a change in supply strategy for many players in the European market, reducing storage use significantly and altering supply patterns across the continent.
