Mexico gas and power markets: 2020 year-in-review
Report summary
2020 was fraught with many challenges. The combination of the global pandemic and regulatory hurdles for renewable energy generation fuelled uncertainty last year, causing turmoil in Mexico’s energy markets. When the lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures peaked during April and May, gas demand and power loads collapsed. Although clear signs of recovery became visible in June, the year ended with a 7% decrease in gas needs and a 2.5% decline in electricity requirements. In this insight, we explore 2020's continued regulatory uncertainty and the coronavirus impacts on gas and power markets.
