The stampede returns: WCSB takeaway concerns resurface
Report summary
WCSB natural gas production is projected to expand by 2-3 bcfd and rocket to over 19 bcfd in the next two years. Can domestic demand and export capacity keep up? We examine WCSB gas balance between 2016 and 2026 to explore the role of export corridors to debottleneck the basin. In conjunction, positive AECO netbacks from key export markets between 2022 and 2026 incentivize sending gas to both Eastern Canada and US markets. This puts downward pressure on AECO basis, making a case for a stampede at the export hubs by 2024 for those with limited export capacity.
