Ukraine transit deal close but sanctions halt Nord Stream 2
This report is currently unavailable
Report summary
A protocol has been agreed between Russia, Ukraine and Europe for the continuation of Ukraine gas transit from 2020. However, just a day later, the US passed sanctions legislation which has forced Nord Stream 2's pipelaying contractor to suspend activities. The transit agreement appears to largely satisfy the parties involved but negotiations are ongoing. Whilst the disruption to Nord Stream 2's pipelaying activities is not expected to affect the transit negotiations adversely, it poses questions over how quickly the pipeline can be commissioned.
