Following the oversupply and price collapse in 2020, the global LNG market took a 180-degree turn in 2021. Global supply was no match for the strength of global demand, contributing to the largest sustained upward LNG price rally ever witnessed, shattering all previous price records. Europe got dangerously short of gas, while China and others raced to secure long term contracted supply. QatarEnergy was the top seller, contracting a monster 205 million tonnes over contract life. China overtook Japan as the world’s largest LNG import market and the United States outpaced the rest of the world in supply growth. For analysis of all the year’s key LNG market developments, check out our 2021: LNG in Review, with contributions from across our Short-Term Analytics, Europe Gas and Global LNG research teams.
