China’s electric vehicle exports face rising trade barriers worldwide. The EU, US, Brazil and Turkey all added tariffs on EVs from China in 2023 and 2024. Internal combustion engine vehicle exports will continue to grow in the short to medium term. Russia and oil producers in the Middle East and Latin America, which have a slower EV penetration forecast, are the major growth markets for China. China will ultimately establish EV manufacturing facilities in their targeted markets. Partner countries’ trade policy towards EV upstream will determine whether China’s EVs are a success story.
