GM to go tailpipe emissions free by 2035

On 28 January, General Motors announced its plans to eliminate all tail pipe emissions from its vehicle portfolio by 2035 on the way to being carbon neutral by 2040. It also signed the ‘Business Ambition Pledge for 1.5°C’ which is a call to action by a coalition of UN agencies. GM chairman and CEO Mary Barra said, “General Motors is joining governments and companies around the globe working to establish a safer, greener and better world. We encourage others to follow suit and make a significant impact on our industry and on the economy as a whole.” GM has promised a US$27 billion investment in electric and autonomous vehicles, a 35% increase over prior plans. It has also committed to converting almost half its product portfolio into electric vehicles by 2025. The goal of carbon neutrality is extended to all of GM’s owned operations as well.
