The demands of de-carbonisation and the rise of the circular economy will undoubtedly affect the zinc market. For zinc, meeting these demands will not be straight forward. The “best available technology” used for recycling approximately one third of the waste products of zinc consumption is highly carbon intensive. So whilst fulfilling the criteria of the circular economy they will fall short of the aim of de-carbonisation. In this insight we will explore the challenges facing the recycling of zinc.
