The success of EVs hinges on them becoming competitive with internal combustion engine vehicles – with the battery pack being the main focus for cost reduction. With high safety standards, labour costs, energy costs, and a growing awareness of environmental, social and governance risks, Europe may be faced with a stark choice. That is, producing ‘home grown’ EVs that are uncompetitive or importing cheaper materials from overseas.
