2022 was one of the most disruptive years for global aluminium supply with nearly 4.5 Mtpa capacity impacted due to the energy crisis in Europe and hydropower shortages in China. Even so, more aluminium capacity is at risk as power contracts and hedges expire. In this insight, we examine the varying types of smelter power contracts to assess how much aluminium capacity may be at risk in the near term.
