The alumina and smelter complex was built between 1941 and 1945, when the smelter produced its first metal. The refinery was later upgraded to Bayer technology in 1980. The Bogoslovsk refinery had far greater capacity than required by the integrated smelter so the excess output was supplied to the company's Siberian-based smelters. Since the closure of the associated smelter in 2013, the refinery only delivers alumina to other smelters within the company portfolio.
