The original smelter at Chifeng had a capacity of 21kt/a and was commissioned in 1995. This was expanded to 50kt/a in 2003, with the addition of a separate roasting facility at Lindong. A Phase III expansion brought capacity to 110kt/a and the Phase IV expansion was located on a site next to the existing smelter and was commissioned in 2011.The capacity of the smelter is now around 210kt/a, and unusually for a Chinese zinc smelter uses the jarosite process for leach residue treatment.
