China is a net steel importer, but for how long?
Report summary
China’s imports of steel have outperformed so far in 2020. Total steel imports including semis and finished steel doubled in the first half of the year, while steel exports shrunk 17% during the same period. This has resulted in China becoming a net steel importer for the first time in over a decade. Here we outline the drivers for China becoming a net steel importer and why we don’t believe it will be a long-term trend.
