Asset Report
Empire iron ore mine
Report summary
Empire is a surface mine located in Michigan's Marquette Iron Range, approximately 24 kilometres southwest of the city of Marquette. Cleveland-Cliffs owns 100% of the operation after acquiring ArcelorMittal's minority ownership stake in September 2017. Empire was closed at the end of 2016 as a result of weak market conditions. We have assumed the mine will remain permanently closed and, as a result, it currently sits out of our base case. In 2010, Empire embarked on an expansion project which allowed the mine to grow its production rate. Some of the mine's output used to be tolled to the neighbouring Tilden mine for processing.
