The Essakane mine is a surface operation, located 330km north east of Ouagadougou, in Burkina Faso. Gold is produced from oxide ore using a conventional carbon-in-leach processing circuit. A new processing line was commissioned in 2014 to mill a higher proportion of harder rock. A carbon fines treatment plant and intensive leach reactor (ILR) were commissioned in 2016 to improve gold recovery at the mill. In 2016, the mine produced 419koz of gold. Based on company guidance, the mine is expected to produce between 411 - 422koz of gold in 2017 (90% attributable production to IAMGOLD of 370 - 380koz).
