The past couple of months has seen significant volatility in the copper price and across the commodities complex. Energy prices have continued to push higher while most industrial metals have fallen. Instability has prevailed across these markets, initially as a result of the war in Ukraine and the impact on demand in China due to Covid-19 restrictions, but more recently amid growing recessionary fears in the rest of the world. However, visible inventories are low while persistent supply disruptions should provide some support to prices, particularly if shorts are forced to cover their positions.
