Global graphite short-term outlook April 2022
Report summary
Early 2022 was marked by disruption in the Chinese supply chain as several natural flake graphite producers remained closed due to environmental violations through to April. In recent weeks, rising prices have plateaued, only for focus to shift to new concerns surrounding China's new wave of Covid-19 lockdowns. These have had a limited impact on natural graphite production so far; however, with disruption to logistics and some shipments unable to leave ports, Chinese exports have begun to be affected. Meanwhile, production and exports in the rest of the world grew through Q1, with output growing significantly in Mozambique and Madagascar for supply to the Chinese battery industry. Global EV sales continue to grow rapidly with record sales of plug-in EVs in March.
