Global graphite short-term outlook February 2023
Report summary
February was a challenging month for the graphite market. Although the earlier Lunar New Year celebrations in 2023 will distort annual comparisons somewhat, demand was undoubtedly softer and supply returned earlier than usual. As a result, lower graphite prices were recorded across the board. Bearing the brunt of the fundamental negativity, the decline in Chinese prices picked up its pace in February. Our graphite demand outlook has been revised following updates to our in-house long-term GDP forecast. Natural graphite supply numbers have also been revised slightly, based on the latest trade data. More significant changes are seen for synthetic graphite, where changes to electrode demand has been balanced by a reduction in synthetic graphite production.
