Graphite FOB prices remained high in November as rising battery demand continued to drive a tightening market, and as consumers began to increase their purchases ahead of Chinese winter mine closures. Further upwards movement was curtailed by the ramp-up of Syrah’s Balama mine which re-opened in mid-October following several weeks of closure due to an industrial dispute. Prices are expected to rise further in December on annual closures before seeing downward adjustment again in the New Year. Demand for lithium-ion battery anode material is going from strength to strength; plug-in electric vehicle sales in October totalled just below one million units, a 6% seasonal increase on September.
