Report summary
In October, average monthly graphite prices transitioned to a slight upwards trend for the first time in H2, following three months of decline from prolonged H1 highs. The price rise is underpinned by the tightening supply-demand balance as demand continues to rise while we enter Q4 with higher levels of consumer purchasing ahead of Chinese winter shutdowns. This was compounded by a shutdown at Syrah Resources’ Mozambican mine in late September due to industrial action, although this closure is expected to be short-lived and not have any real long-term impact on global supply or prices. Meanwhile, demand continues to rise robustly with EV sales reported to have increased by 15% in September. Monthly sales exceeded one million units for the first time, of which, 67% were in China.
