Global zinc short-term outlook August 2022
Report summary
Although the news that Nyrstar will place its Budel smelter on care and maintenance helped to propel the zinc price higher, it proved to be short lived, as macroeconomic concerns reasserted influence. However, with forward baseload power prices set to jump to exceptionally high levels in Europe, further production cuts seem likely. The impact of these cuts on the supply and demand balance will depend on what happens to demand in the coming months. With some European steel makers said to be considering cutting their zinc consumption in Q3 and Q4, some of the supply losses could be offset by falls in European demand.
