The smelter was commissioned in 1974 with the present capacity of 31kt/a anode. Concentrate is mainly provided from the adjacent mine and from Hindustan's Malanjkhand mine. Anodes are refined at a refinery on site. Acid from the smelter is used in an on site phosphate fertiliser plant. In November 1999 the Indian Government announced that it would split Hindustan Copper into two companies prior to partial privatisation.
