Khumani iron ore mine

Report summary

Khumani is a surface mine in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and is operated by Assmang, a 50/50 venture by Assore and African Rainbow Minerals. The mine has a capacity of 14 Mtpa and all of its output is sold to the seaborne export market. Mining costs fell 45% between 2013 and 2016 owing to the depreciation of the South African Rand and strip ratios being more than halved. Costs, however, rose in 2017 because of increases in wages, a rise in strip ratios and higher power and water prices.
