The smelter was commissioned in 1981 with a nominal capacity of 59kt/a copper and at a cost of US$240M, including the refinery. The potential for higher production by increased oxygen enrichment was demonstrated with purchased liquid oxygen. Consequently, a second oxygen plant was installed in 1985 that, together with other modifications notably to the feed conveyor system, increased the plant capacity to 100kt/a.
