The Kittilä mine in northern Finland is Europe’s largest primary gold mine. Located in Lapland, about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle, the site benefits from a Gulf Stream–moderated climate that allows year‑round mining. Commercial production in May 2009 as Agnico Eagle’s first operation outside Canada. After open‑pit mining ended in 2012, Kittilä has operated solely as an underground mine. Ore is treated at a surface plant using grinding, flotation, pressure oxidation, and carbon‑in‑leach processes. Kittilä also hosts Agnico Eagle’s only autoclave, required to process its refractory ore.
