Lihir gold mine
Report summary
The Lihir mine is located on Niolam Island (Lihir Island), New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, approximately 900 kilometres north-northeast of the capital city, Port Moresby. The large surface operation is 100% owned and operated by Newcrest, and mines one of the largest epithermal gold deposits in the world, producing 772 Koz gold in 2020. The mine started production in 1997 and is expected to continue to at least 2041.
