Lihir gold mine

Report summary

The Lihir mine is located on the Niolam Island (Lihir Island), New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea, approximately 900 kilometres north-northeast of the capital city, Port Moresby. The large surface mine produces over 500 koz gold per year and is 100% owned and operated by Newcrest. The mine started production in 1997 and is expected to continue to past 2040.
