The Lihir mine is located on the Niolam Island (Lihir Island) New Ireland Province Papua New Guinea approximately 900 kilometres north northeast of the capital city Port Moresby. The large surface mine produces over 500 koz gold per year and is 100% owned and operated by Newcrest. The mine started production in 1997 and is expected to continue to past 2040.
