The smelter was commissioned in 1932 to treat concentrate from the adjacent Roan Antelope mine. Since commissioning it has used conventional reverberatory furnace and Peirce-Smith converter technology. By the late 1960s, with three reverberatory furnaces and four Peirce-Smith converters, capacity had reached 120kt/a.
