The smelter treats concentrate from the company's local mines and the anodes produced are refined at the adjacent Ghatsila refinery. The smelter was shut down temporarily from November 1998 to May 1999 as the local mines were shutdown due to the low price of copper. In November 1999 the Indian Government announced that it would split Hindustan Copper into two companies prior to partial privatisation.
