Magnetation iron ore mine

Magnetation iron ore mine

Report summary

Magnetation, LLC is a joint venture between AK Steel and Magnetation, Inc. – a company founded in 2006 by Al Fritz and Rod Hunt, and focused on developing a beneficiation process based on a technology Fritz invented in the 1970's.  In 2008, the pair brought in Mesabi Range veteran Larry Lehtinen to lead the company out of its developmental stage and into production.  In May 2015, Magnetation filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. We estimate the operations are losing US$30/tonne under our price assumptions and there is a risk of the operations being closed or divested.
